MAY 31 BENEFIT SHOW IN nyc to RAISE mONEY FOR wOMEN'S CANCER RESEARCH
New York, NY - May 4th, 2011 - Doctors by day and a rock band by night,
the members N.E.D. are dedicated women's cancer surgeons who believe
good tunes can significantly help out patients who are battling
difficult illnesses. Always with the highest hope of delivering the
sweetest words a cancer patient can hear: "No Evidence of Disease," the
band of gynecologist oncologists is getting ready to release their
second album 6 Degrees on May 31st with a benefit show at Drom located
at 85 Avenue A in New York City. The band has even gotten a seal of
approval from indie rock goddess Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, whose
gynecologist Dr. Nimesh Nagarsheth serves as drummer for the
unconventional band.
"As if being a doctor wasn't admirable enough, the members of NED are
saving lives by day and spreading the message of healing through their
music by night. These are doctors playing music to heal, heal themselves
and their audience, that's a type of healing of which I can deeply
relate. I hope to help their music raise awareness for women's health as
much as it does the roof!" she says.
Two other benefit shows have been confirmed, a second NYC show on June
1st on the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier with American Idol's Jordin Sparks
(https://ogilvycares.ogilvy.com/) and one on July 10 at Capitol Hill in
Washington D.C. (http://www.ovariancancer.org/ned/). On July 11th, Dr.
Nimesh Nagarsheth will address the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance with
a lecture on Music and Healing followed by a Capitol Hill visit with
Congressional leaders to promote support for women's cancer research.
Proceeds from the CD and related merchandise and select show ticket
sales will be donated to the N.E.D. Fund at Marjie's Fund (
http://marjiesfund.org/what-new.html) established under the 501(c3)
tax-deductible charity with a mission to help promote women's cancer
awareness.
Produced by Mario McNulty the new album (David Bowie, Laurie Anderson,
Linkin Park and Anti-Flag), N.E.D gathered together from around the
country to write, rehearse and record 6 Degrees which feature 12
original songs inspired by their experiences as doctors. The band's
name, N.E.D., is an abbreviation for "No Evidence of Disease." The
musicians are full-time practicing surgeons, researchers, and
professors, and each is an expert in the field of cancer care. They come
from all over the country: Alaska, Oregon, Louisiana, North Carolina,
and New York; and connected musically for the first time at the 2008
Society of Gynecologic Oncologists Conference, where they performed
cover songs at an evening mixer. They discovered a natural chemistry,
and the response from the audience for their first show was so positive,
that they soon began writing original music across the miles with the
aid of technology and mail services landed a record deal (their
self-entitled debut album was released in 2009 and included an in-depth
educational pamphlet: "What Every Woman Should Know," which is a
valuable and pocket-sided guide to gynecologic cancer prevention,
diagnosis, and treatment).
In 2012, Spark Media will release a full length documentary film
entitled Dancing with N.E.D. that follows the story behind this amazing
band (http://www.dancingwithned.com/).

About Music and Cancer
More than 250 journal articles report findings investigating the
beneficial effects of music on pain, anxiety or depression. In a study
at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, investigators found that
patients who received music therapy while undergoing chemotherapy
reported 37% less mood disturbance than other patients and 28% less
anxiety/depression. Other studies have shown that music can
significantly assist patients in coping with difficult illnesses.
Further expanding on the concept of music and healing, Dr. Nimesh
Nagarsheth, drummer for N.E.D., has written a book called Music &
Cancer: A Prescription for Healing
<http://www.jblearning.com/catalog/9780763779085/> , prefaced by a
powerful introduction by cancer survivor Fran Drescher. The book and
band proceeds (from shows and sales) are being donated to the N.E.D.
Fund at Marjie's Fund, a 501(c3) charity whose mission is to educate the
public about gynecologic cancers.
