"LA-based Happy Hollows have a gem in their sophomore album...Amethyst is truly magical, smashing all stereotypes of what female fronted bands are made of." -Ladygunn Magazine.com

"[Galaxies] instantly catchy shimmering pop hooks are just what you need to get the weekend rolling." - NYLON Magazine.com

"...You can squeeze your eyes shut and practically see the stars bouncing through the sky along with the beat, or perhaps the neon pink signs flickering down Sunset Boulevard." - San Francisco Bay Guardian

"Happy Hollows combine everything from '60s garage and folk rock to '80s shimmer and '90s alterna-tude, relentlessly experimenting with slightly unorthodox, yet surprisingly catchy (and often high-pitched) vocal lines and effects-processed simple guitar, keyboard lines and driving drumbeats." - Portland Tribune

Happy Hollows started out their career as a garage-rock three piece, focusing on their live performances and playing anywhere they could, opening for the likes of Deerhoof, Besnard Lakes, and Japandroids. The band then released their debut full length Spells (2010) which Consequence of Sound called, "remarkably entertaining," while Pitchfork raved that the album was a "ripper" and that Negahdari was "an obvious talent...whose guitar playing juts in and out of tracks like a jagged saw."

After touring in support of Spells, the group experienced a shakeup when original drummer Chris Hernandez left the band in 2011. The creative approach for Happy Hollows changed drastically from that point onward, looking towards synthesizers and drum machines to fill the rhythmic space. Amethyst is a product of that newfound sense of sonic experimentation, incorporating synths and electronics but also staying true to their indie rock origins. Amethyst was recorded with producer Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, Fools Gold) at Black Iris studios in Echo Park and Infrasonic Sound in Los Angeles. Happy Hollows is Sarah Negahdari (vocals, guitar), Charlie Mahoney (bass, synths) and Matthew Fry (guitar). Sarah Negahdari, the front-woman of the band, is fresh off the road as the touring bassist for Silversun Pickups.
