Palmyra Delran, celebrated as the high-octane engine and guitar siren behind the '90s chick-powered retro garage-pop band The Friggs, has announced that she will release her first solo full-length album You Are What You Absorb in March 2013. Little Steven Van Zandt had the scoop on the album this past weekend, premiering the jangly lead single "You're My Brian Jones" on his nationally syndicated radio show Little Steven's Underground Garage. The song is currently being featured as "The Coolest Song In The World" on SiriusXM's Little Steven's Underground Garage channel. To her fans' delight, Palmyra just showcased her new material from You Are What You Absorb during her show last week in Philadelphia with The Woggles (featuring Little Steven's Underground Garage DJ Mighty Manfred).
As the '90s were winding down and the underground music scene was recovering from The Friggs' no-holds-barred mash-up of trash punk pop, surfer grooves and badass attitude, Palmyra was soaking up inspiration. She re-emerged in 2008 to give us the first taste of her solo work with the She Digs The Ride EP. The collection of punchy girl-group guitar pop tracks spawned "Baby Should Have Known Better" which was voted by listeners as "The Coolest Song of 2008" on Little Steven's Underground Garage radio show. After reuniting with The Friggs to put out a compilation of the band's out-of-print vinyl singles entitled Today Is Tomorrow's Yesterday and re-assuming her place on stage with the band for special knock-out shows, she returned to her solo work in 2010. Palmyra released the hook-filled singles "Shut Out" and "Lies For You," the latter becoming her second song to get the "Coolest Song In The World" nod. In early 2012 Palmyra teamed up with singer/songwriter Rachelle Garniez (who co-wrote "You're My Brian Jones") to create KinderAngst, a punk rock album for children and parents that gently addresses the growing pains and challenges of childhood. Praised by People Magazine, AOL Spinner, WXPN, New York Family and more, the album includes stand-out track "Do It Yourself" featuring Debbie Harry singing about the value of learning to be independent. Recorded by Craig Dreyer at Mighty Toad Studio in Brooklyn, NY and mixed by Geoff Sanoff at Stratosphere Sound Studio in New York City and INTL HQ in Brooklyn, NY, You Are What You Absorb offers up an intoxicating romp through the influences that have come to define Palmyra, but more importantly, that she has helped to define. Along with her ever-present punk grit, these 12 tracks overflow with Palmyra's signature blend of hook-laden melodies, bright surf-pop, retro sass and cut-to-the-bone lyrics. From the guitar fuzz of "Never To Be Back Again" to the biting yet infectious chorus of "Your Best Friend" to the sweet and vulnerable "Some Day Soon," You Are What You Absorb is an album of refreshingly honest music, reminding us all that Palmyra's unique rock 'n' roll spirit is just as captivating today as it was nearly two decades ago.
