Today, October 15th, We Are Scientists release their first music in three years in the form of a new EP entitled Business Casual on Dine Alone Records (City and Colour, Lumineers).  The five-track collection features two songs from the forthcoming album, and a trio of sweeter, more tender tunes. "Were I still in a situation that might allow the kicking of my ass by playground bullies, I'd definitely be worried about the sanctity of my butt, given the tenderness of these tunes," says guitarist/vocalist Keith Murray, glancing nervously over his shoulder. The band will also make an appearance in their hometown of Brooklyn, NY to headline the Windish Agency CMJ Showcase at the Brooklyn Bowl (10/18). "It's an EP release party, in our hearts. We're not telling anyone else that. Windish think it's their party - let them think that. It's an EP release party," says bassist Chris Cain.

It's been a few years since New York-based We Are Scientists released their last full-length Barbara, but not because they've just been sitting around playing on their communal Xbox. No, they've been surfing in Bali, sucking down cervezas in Bogota, stealing priceless artwork from Hermitage in St. Petersburg (*unproven). They also did plenty of writing and recording, as 2013 is beginning to show.

The duo first hinted at a resurgence with a double A-side vinyl in July 2013, featuring tracks "Something About You," and "Let Me Win," each culled from the sessions that contributed to two songs to Business Casual. The 7' was sold exclusively through the band's website, and made available only to those with money. "We sure aren't giving this thing away," said keith at the time. "I mean, it's very cheap, but it's not, like, zero money."

The video was directed by Dan Monick, the keen eye responsible for much of the band's photography over the years.

Business Casual illuminates the full range of We Are Scientists' prowess, from the big chorus of "Return the Favor" to the visceral rock of "Dumb Luck," both of which were produced by Chris Coady (Beach House, Smith Westerns, Yuck) at Magic Shop in New York City. Fans of the slop-rock band Berlin will be initially concerned but ultimately converted when they're faced with W.A.S.'s smooth, pedal-steel version of the "classic" love song, "Take My Breath Away." That track and the ultimately more important "Good Answer" were recorded at Atomic Heart in NYC with Claudius Mittendorfer (Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Interpol).
