New York, NY – September 6th, 2012 – BOOM for Equality and Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman) are proud to announce the inaugural event Freedom To Love Now! A Concert for Marriage Equality, to be held October 30, 2012 at New York City's Beacon Theatre. Some of the most celebrated artists of our time will unite on this historic night for a common purpose: to demand equal rights for all in America. Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman), who also serves as Music Director and Curator, recruited a star-studded cast including Rufus Wainwright, The National, fun., They Might Be Giants, John Cameron Mitchellwith Stephen Trask, Justin Vivian Bond, Toshi Reagon, and more to be announced soon. Proceeds from this event will benefit Freedom to Marry(www.freedomtomarry.org<http://www.freedomtomarry.org/>) whose mission is to win marriage nationwide for all Americans. Special artist presale begins Friday, September 7 at 11am, followed by general on sale Saturday, September 8 at 10am.
The artists performing at Freedom To Love Now! will remind voters of the importance of this upcoming election, while celebrating President Obama’s recent bold declaration: “Same-sex couples should be able to get married.” This was the first time a sitting president ever uttered such words. On the eve of theDemocratic National Convention, the Democratic Party made history again, when it offered its formal support for same-sex marriage rights for the very first time. But the battle has just begun. Recently, North Carolina made same-sex marriage against the law, and New Jersey’s governor vetoed a measure that would have made same-sex marriage legal. On November 6th, constituents from four states – Washington, Minnesota, Maine, and Maryland -- will determine the fate of thousands of same sex couples when they go to the polls. Money raised from this concert will support Freedom to Marry's ongoing grassroots efforts in these swing states, which will not only impact the outcome of the general election, but may benefit countless citizens.
“The key to winning the freedom to marry is raising our voices, opening hearts, and moving minds,” said Evan Wolfson, Freedom to Marry’s founder and president. “Freedom to Marry is happy to be a part of this concert and support such a diverse, talented group of performers who are giving their brilliance and time to this important cause.”
Singer and guitarist John Flansburgh from They Might Be Giants agrees. "I can't recall being in better company for a better cause. It is going to be a night to remember." fun.'s Jack Antonoff adds, “The upcoming election will be vital for all of us who believe in ending discrimination. We can't wait to be a part of this amazing event with some of our favorite artists and raise money for an incredible organization that is working hard for a better America.”
October 30th won’t be the last time Americans fight for the freedom to love and have it be acknowledged by law. Brice Rosenbloom, Simon Rentner, and Thomas Bartlett, the co-founders of this event, believe this message should reverberate far beyond Beacon Theatre’s walls. “We want this show to be a Call to Action, for folks just like us -- musicians, fans, high-school students, any American citizen – to standup for what’s right, and throw their own marriage equality event and support our president,” says Simon Rentner. The concert’s user-friendly homepage www.freedomtolovenow.com<http://www.freedomtolovenow.com/> will hopefully achieve just that, serving as a launching pad for anyone around the country to organize their own event. There, people can publicize their event, share the details with others, and be united with other organizers across state borders. Freedom To Love Now! is pleased to consider partnerships and sponsorship opportunities to maximize its outreach and bring additional awareness to this issue until marriage equality is won in all fifty states.
