performance from acclaimed vocalist and songwriter Somi. Somi will be
performing songs from her latest album, If the Rains Come First, live
from the Jerome L. Greene Performance Space.

Originally from Uganda and Rwanda, Somi grew up between Illinois and
Zambia, but currently resides in Harlem. Her third full length album, If
the Rains Come First (ObliqSound) debuted at #2 on the Billboard World
Music Charts and secured Somi's position on the front lines of a new
generation of emerging African artists. On May 11th, Somi will take the
stage at 651 ARTS with celebrated musician Hugh Masekela as part of the
"Live & Outspoken" series that pairs up and coming artists with
legendary performers. Masekela, who appears on If the Rains Come First,
will interview Somi then join her band for a very special performance.=20

Somi has collaborated with and performed alongside artists including
Paul Simon, John Legend, Cassandra Wilson, Mos Def, Randy Weston, Idan
Raichel, Roy Hargrove, and Amel Larrieux.  She and her band continue to
perform at venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center (NYC), the Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, DC), Tchaikovsky Hall
(Moscow), La Cigale (Paris) and Amahoro Stadium (Kigali). In the Spring
of 2008, Somi co-wrote and performed in the original multimedia theater
piece Listening to Roots and Voicing Branches to sold out performances
at the legendary Apollo Theater. Somi founded the non-profit
organization New Africa Live, a platform for multi-disciplinary events
and performances founded with the aim of carving out a cultural space of
belonging for contemporary African artists. Over the past two years, New
Africa Live has presented acclaimed and influential artist such as
Somali folk hip-hop emcee K'NAAN, South African superstar Zolani Mahola
of Freshly Ground, the electro-soul project of the Ghanaian lead singer
of Fela! Abena Koomson, South African art rock collective BlkJks and
Grammy winning jazz artist Lionel Loueke of Benin.
