Gruff Rhys has announced the US release of his new album American Interior.  The album is part of a multimedia exploration of his 2012 American "investigative concert tour" told in song, documentary film, book and app form. In 2012, Gruff - known around the world for his work with Super Furry Animals and Neon Neon, as well as his collaborations with Gorillaz, Dangermouse and Sparklehorse, Mogwai, Sabrina Salerno, Simian Mobile Disco - toured the United States seeking out the final resting place of his distant relative John Evans, who left Wales in 1792 on a quest to find a mythical tribe of Welsh speaking First Nation Americans.  The 2012 tour began in New Haven, CT where Evans’ personal map is said to reside. From there Gruff followed in his relative’s footsteps as he investigated Evans’s significance in American history, the true circumstances of his death and the secret location of his burial. Using film, written word, photo-story, social media and song to create a documentary road movie, book and album, Gruff captures the tale of John Evans epic, and ultimately fatal, journey in his own captivating and inimitable style.

The exclusive US edition of the American Interior album will be released on Turnstile on November 4th.  The US release will include bonus material. Watch this space for details.

Gruff has confirmed a series of North American live shows for American Interior. These special performances feature music and visual story-telling as Gruff reports his findings on John Evans' journey to audiences in several cities this November. He'll make stops in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Portland, Los Angeles and more.  All tour dates are below.

The American Interior documentary debuted earlier this year at the South By South West Film festival. Directed by Dylan Goch - who also directed Gruff's 2009 South American road trip movie Separado! - the film follows Gruff and his hand stitched John Evans "avatar" as they retrace the earlier Welshman's epic journey across America. American Interior is a hugely unique creative endeavor, with Gruff weaving together his music and storytelling talents to tell a truly engaging tale of history and how myth-making can inspire humans to partake in crazy, vain pursuits of glory, including exploration, war and the creative arts.

The American Interior project was inspired by John Evans, a 22-year old laborer, who responded to a plea for a brave soul to ascertain if there was indeed a tribe of Welsh-speaking First Nation Americans still walking the Great Plains, descendants of Prince Madog (widely believed at the time to have discovered America in 1170). During the course of an extraordinary adventure, Evans wrestled the largest river reptiles ever seen in the Mississippi, hunted Bison with the Omaha tribe, defected to the Spanish in St Louis, discovered imaginary volcanoes in Missouri, annexed North Dakota from the British, and created the map that guided Lewis and Clarke on their legendary expedition.

Two centuries later Gruff Rhys embarks on the same trip and returns with one of the most inventive albums of the year.
