In other news, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars – one of Africa’s most lauded and active touring bands – have announced that they will be bringing their vibrant live show to North America in the coming months. The band will begin their run of select headlining shows and festival dates in San Diego, CA on May 18th, and will play the uplifting songs from Radio Salone for their adoring fans from coast to coast, including stops in Kansas City, Memphis and Iowa City and live sets at the Joshua Tree Music Festival on May 19th, the TD Toronto Jazz Festival on July 1st and The Gaia Festival in Laytonville, CA on August 4th. The full list of dates is below.

Radio Salone was produced by roots reggae, soul and Afrobeat guru Victor Axelrod, aka Ticklah, (Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, Amy Winehouse, Easy Star All Stars, Antibalas) and is the follow-up to the band’s 2010 album Rise & Shine, which was the #1 of the year on the World Music Charts Europe. This album marks the band’s most musically sophisticated and virtuosic collection of songs to date, featuring a definitive vintage African vibe and intricate dub elements that connect traditional West African sounds with roots reggae in ways that the band has never before explored.

Having persevered through the horrors of the Sierra Leone civil war, band leader Reuben Koroma and the group continue to evolve musically in exciting ways, well past their jam sessions in the Guinean refugee camps and the 2005 documentary that launched them onto a global platform. Their music, ever rife with hopeful messages and joyful rhythms, has garnered them praise from the likes of the New York Times, NPR, BBC, CNN, PBS, Billboard and more. They appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, opened for Aerosmith and contributed to the Blood Diamond film soundtrack while the likes of Paul McCartney and Keith Richards have sung their praises. From the ashes of war, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have risen like a phoenix and have gone on to spread hope and healing through music.
