"'Trying to Believe' sounds like a song that could've easily scored a Sons misadventure, with crisp drums, searing guitar licks, and Mosshart's peerless howl" - SPIN
The musical group behind seven successful seasons of FX drama Sons Of Anarchy will release their first album, LAND HO! on July 10th via InGrooves. Led by Emmy-nominated songwriter and composer Bob Thiele Jr., The Forest Rangers recorded the 11-track collection during the final season of the show, and it was co-produced by Thiele and Grammy-winning producer/engineer Dave Way (Michael Jackson, Macy Gray, Ringo Starr).
Thiele co-wrote all of the songs on LAND HO!, many with two of his long-time songwriter pals Dillon O'Brian (Mariah Carey, Shakira) & Tonio K (Al Green, Aaron Neville). He also collaborated with a remarkable group of artists and writers who made significant contributions to the Sons of Anarchy soundtracks, including Audra Mae, Battleme, Amos Lee, Alison Mosshart, Katey Sagal and Billy Valentine. Rounding out the contributors to LAND HO! are Greg Leisz (Daft Punk, Bon Iver, Eric Clapton) who brought his lap steel, pedal steel guitar and mandolin to the album, bass player Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello & The Imposters), drummer Matt Chamberlain's (Fiona Apple, Frank Ocean) and John Philip Shenale (Jane's Addiction, Tori Amos), who provided exquisite string arrangements on "So-Called Life" and "I'm Alive."
In addition to the musicians mentioned above, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane's contribution to the title track was particularly meaningful. "My father produced albums by Ravi's father from 1961 until 1967. Historic records like Ascension and A Love Supreme," said Thiele. "Ravi and I had not met until the night he came to the Record Plant in New York City to play on the track. It was an indescribable experience, pure energy and emotion. I was literally in tears upon hearing Ravi's first phrases."
"In 1979, I had the idea to make a record as a solo artist. A few things happened along the way and that idea of mine was put on hold," explained Thiele, who, much like his father legendary record producer Bob Thiele, has spent the majority of his career on the other side of the vocal booth: producing, playing and writing. "I've always been a songwriter, and I've had some success with it over the years (Bonnie Raitt, Ray Charles, Mavis and Pop Staples). But at some point, the art became a job and I found myself writing songs mainly to satisfy the company that was paying my salary. It ceased to be the creative experience that drew me to music in the first place. One of the unexpected gifts given to me by Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy creator) was the chance to write songs again that meant something to me," said Thiele, who co-wrote a number of songs for the series, including the Emmy-nominated theme song "This Life."
"At the start of Sons of Anarchy, Bob Thiele put together a talented group of musicians to work on our covers and source-score," said Kurt Sutter. "Over time, The Forest Rangers' mellifluous camaraderie cultivated a unique folk/indie/Cali-rock sound that became the musical signature of the show. Their first solo reflects that time together and goes beyond what they did on SOA. Clearly, I was holding them back. LAND HO! is raw, soulful and fucking fun."
It might have taken Thiele 35 years to get here, but this is a record made by great musicians for music fans. It's got soul, folk, and Americana running through its veins and it takes listeners on a musical journey inspired by a show that critics have called "commanding" and "mesmerizing," and landed Bob back where he belongs.
