Bonzie is the moniker of the incredibly talented 17-year-old songstress and multi-instrumentalist Nina Ferraro. Today the stunning, Chicago-based musician premieres her dark, psychedelic driven indie-rock track “Data Blockers” on Spin.com.

The lead, mind-altering tune, which is from her upcoming debut album Rift Into The Secret Of Things (out independently on May 14th, 2013), has a very young Cat Power feel to it, and showcases Bonzie’s strong guitar skills and astonishing songwriting ability. The track transforms half-way through; shifting its apex from zealous lyrics like, “Fix myself/ with my own hands/do not accept any help/ it’s a trick/a trick question/when the answer is a trick itself,” into a surreal, dream-like rhythm. Her vocals die down to a coquettish coo over psychedelic electric guitar riffs and jazz fused riffs of an upright bass. The last minute of the song is where it begins to open up and blossom - Ferraro stops singing, and ends the track by playing beautiful, classical piano chords. It’s a perfect representation of how complex, and beyond her years, Bonzie and her sound is.

Ferraro took on the role of co-producer with Will Golden, and teamed up with engineer Tom Biller (Elliott Smith, Fiona Apple) to orchestrate Rift Into The Secret Of Things. She describes this album as more experimental and dynamic than her past music. Songs like “Convert” and “Daniel and the Great Solstice,” with their finger-picked acoustic melodies, swell with elegant string arrangements that raise the emotional ante of the songs.

The album’s title is inspired by a passage in one of Ferraro’s favorite books, Thoreau’s Walden. “It's about how to get to the essence, to put aside intellect or logic in order to reach the truth, or whatever the essence of a thing is,” Ferraro explains. “Much of this album is shaped underneath that thought. There is a core to it that ties the songs together. It's subtle, but it's there. It's difficult to declare this album any one thing because it varies song to song, but there is a theme. It's my hope that the listener will be able to tap into that.”

By the age of nine Ferraro was completely devoted to making music, and performing at local cafes at the age of 12. She was inspired by such records as: PJ Harvey’s Dry, Slint’s Spiderland, Elliott Smith’s Roman Candle, The Pixies’ Surfer Rosa, Bright Eyes’ Lifted, Jim O’Rourke’s Eureka, Björk’s Medúlla, and Daniel Johnston’s Hi, How Are You. Fast forward to now and Bonzie has manifested into a songwriter that isn’t traditional or confessional, but more of an observer and commentator. She is drawn to expressing the concerns of her generational cohort (the bond between independence and interdependence, not wanting to be manipulated, and view one’s self beyond society) with unwavering honesty.

Be sure to check out Bonzie next month for three special performances in New York City starting on Thursday, March 28th at Rockwood Music Hall, followed by shows on Friday, March 29th at Arlene’s Grocery and Saturday, March 30th at The Living Room.
