"There are plenty of sweet hooks among the up-tempo tunes that carry this follow-up" - BBC Music
"Madison Violet represent the BEST in pop-bluegrass" - Mojo Magazine
"Exquisite harmonies and lush instrumentation, seasoned with banjo, mandolin, pedal steel, accordion, harmonica and fiddle, meld to create something hauntingly lovely and refreshing." - Winnipeg Free Press
Finding the good in goodbye is always bittersweet. JUNO nominated roots duo Madison Violet (Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac) can attest to that with their latest release, The Good in Goodbye. An album born from their growth, both together and apart, The Good in Goodbye is an open diary of their personal and professional experiences together as friends and musicians, two very unique relationships that affect each other in profound ways.
The U.S. release of The Good in Goodbye finds the record already receiving praise around the globe. The album is nominated for a 2012 East Coast Music Award for Folk Recording of the Year, and the duo have just completed a sold-out UK tour in support of the album's release. Touring plans also include a headlining tour in Australia this March, followed by a U.S. tour this spring. Since releasing their last album, No Fool for Trying (2009), Madison Violet took home the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, a 2010 JUNO Award nomination for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year (Group), and won the 2009 John Lennon Songwriting Contest for their track "The Ransom."
As a follow-up to their breakthrough successes in 2010, The Good in Goodbye captures the duo's growth and musical maturity. Their distinct take on iconic Americana-inspired up-tempo melodies beautifully contrasts with their breathtakingly sweeping and personal lyrics, creating songs that blend nods to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch with radio-friendly flecks of The Band Perry. To capture the intimacy of The Good in Goodbye, Madison Violet returned to the studio with trusted friend and producer Les Cooper (Jill Barber) while bringing a collective of remarkable musicians into the fold, including Joel Stouffer (Dragonette) on drums, Adrian Lawryshyn (Andy Stochansky) on bass, vocals from Ruth Moody (The Wailin' Jennys) and singer/songwriter Blair Packham. The result is an album of masterfully crafted songs, at times deeply soulful and at times cheerfully whimsical. The album opens with the breezy yet heartrending "If I Could Love You," and unfolds into a beautiful collection of lushly arranged roots-pop tunes. The ladies flex their bluegrass muscle on their take of traditional American folk song "Cindy Cindy," and take an introspective turn in the lovely "Stuck In a Love." "Fallen By the Wayside," co-written by Ron Sexsmith, is a perfect example of Brenley and Lisa's unwavering musical partnership, their voices intertwined seamlessly into arresting harmonies. The deluxe release of The Good in Goodbye also includes a cover of Barney Bentall's "Something to Live For," which closes the album.
