The song is off the band's fifth full-length album Amid The Noise And Haste on August 12th, 2014 and the band's second album for ATO Records.

The track "Shadow" came together unexpectedly from lead singer Jacob Hemphill and lead guitarist and vocalist Trevor Young.

"Trevor and I were walking through Lisbon, Portugal when we heard singing coming from a window that I recognized as West African dialect," says Hemphill. "I lived there as a kid. Me and Trevor walked up and sat in. They were awesome.  We walked back to the hotel, discussing something I had experienced as a kid; about how the African kids had such big smiles, they were so happy, but they had nothing.  Shorts, shoes, that's it. I wondered my whole life why. Trevor said because they knew they weren't throw away people, not shadows. We sat down in the room and he played me something he had been working on, shadow."

Young goes on to explain that the idea behind the song was that "everyone has their own voice and opinion that matters. Everyone has a voice and something to contribute to the situation around you for good. This is an uplifting anthem. 'I stand up and I stand tall. I don't follow anyone. I'm not a shadow.'"

Amid The Noise And Haste was produced by multiple GRAMMY award winning Jamaican producer Supa Dups (Bruno Mars, Eminem, Rihanna, John Legend) and is the first full-length album he has chosen to take on in his career. The new album is the follow up to critically acclaimed Strength To Survive which debuted in the Billboard Top 40. Amid The Noise And Haste features special guests including Michael Franti, Damian Marley, and Collie Buddz.

The new album cover art was designed by the British artist Steven Wilson and was carved by original wood pieces.

SOJA originally formed by a group of friends while still in middle school and has built a massive, dedicated fan base around the world since.
