SAN FRANCISCO, CA =AD November 20, 2008=8A San Francisco=B9s most talked-about
5-piece, The Music Lovers, are set to release their brand new full-length
=8CMasculine, Feminine=B9 January 20, 2009 on Detroit=B9s Le Grand Magistery
Records. =8CMasculine, Feminine,=B9 released in the UK through Shellshock in
January as well, can be described as battered, inebriate and sensual as wel=
l
as defiantly and unfashionably romantic - the first three months of a new
love affair or seven years in jail for a crime of passion.
=20
The Music Lovers are led by transplanted English songwriter Matthew Edwards
on lead vocals and guitar. Edwards is accompanied by Jon Brooder (bass,
harmonica), Bryan Cain (guitar, backing vocals), Kate Weeks (viola,
percussion, keyboards), Ping Chu (drums), and on occasion, Jun Kurihara
(vocals, accordion, piano.)
Their third album on Le Grand Magistery, =8CMasculine Feminine=B9 marks the
pinnacle of the band=B9s artistic endeavours. Edwards refers to the album as
his own personal =8CDay of the Locust,=B9 a travelogue through the underbelly o=
f
the almost-famous doyens of LA and San Francisco. Like a toxic Graham Green=
e
on a tear, Edwards speaks of motels, love affairs, addictions, vamps and
ing=E9nues, pausing on occasion to look back on a half-remembered England and
wonder what went wrong (or right)? These are desperate songs born of need
and frustration, but never dreary or self-pitying. Rather, they show a
formidable spirit of abandon to the pop aesthetic, saddling the darkest
sensibilities and most wicked proclivities to the sweetest pop-song
frame-works.=20
=20
The music is that of a girl-group on a dreary Tuesday morning in 1976=8A
quietly exultant on a radio in Birmingham. Influences range from Serge
Gainsbourg, Dusty Springfield, Prefab Sprout, The Zombies, The Smiths and
Roxy Music to Jimmy Webb, Dexy's Midnight Runners, The Bad Seeds,
Go-Betweens, The Clash and Pulp. If David Goodis had written lyrics for
Carole King they might have sounded a bit like this record. All are =8Clove
songs,=B9 not only to people, but to places, states of mind and to divine
release.=20
=20
While the US waits in anticipation for =8CMasculine, Feminine,=B9 the album and
the band are already on the rise in Italy. The record was released on
Rome=B9s Sleeping Star Records in September 2008 while in October 2008, the
band was featured in Italian Rolling Stone, Rumore, and Rockerilla and the
video for =B3Saturday=B2 was in rotation on AllMusic TV. "Saturday" is also
featured on the soundtrack for the Italian documentary 'Kill Gil 2 1/2' by
Gil Rossellini (son of Roberto Rossellini) which recently premiered at the
Rome Film Festival.
=20
Also on the movie front, The Music Lovers perform the theme song to Steve
Balderson=B9s new movie =8CWatch Out,=B9 on general release in January 2009. In
addition, short movies compliment two of the new album=B9s tracks. Famed
short film director Kipp Davi has made a movie for =B3Saturday=B2 and
award-winning photographer/filmmaker Cody Pickens will create a movie for
=B3Bobbie Gentry.=B2
=20
The Music Lovers are undeniably the band to watch in 2009. Masculine,
Feminine hits stores January 20. See below for initial tour stops. For

Music Lovers are hopelessly heartbroken and romantic, literate almost to a
