Oscilloscope Laboratories proudly presents PULP: A FILM ABOUT LIFE, DEATH, AND SUPERMARKETS, Florian Habicht's witty, innovative documentary about the legendary titular band - inarguably the smartest and most charismatic in all of Britpop- as they prepare to say farewell with a huge hometown show in their native Sheffield after 25 years together. PULP had its world premiere at this year's SXSW Film Festival.
The film will open theatrically in select markets on November 19th with a premiere event in Los Angeles on August 5th at the Ace Hotel as a special presentation for Don't Knock The Rock Film and Music Festival. The night includes a rare Q&A with enigmatic Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker and Florian Habicht. (This event is sold out, but there are a limited number of press tickets available. Speak now or forever hold your peace!)
New Yorkers can see the film a day later, August 6th, as it screens as the closing night film for the Film Society of Lincoln Center's second annual music documentary series Sound + Vision, with director Habicht in attendance.
The film will then play on August 7th at Rooftop Films, Brooklyn (on the roof of Industry City in Sunset Park), with Jarvis Cocker acting as judge for a post-screening Pulp karaoke contest.
Though culminating with the farewell concert the band played to thousands of adoring fans in their hometown of Sheffield, England in December 2012, PULP is by no means a traditional concert film or rock doc. As much a testament to the band as it is to the city and inhabitants of Sheffield, PULP weaves exclusive concert footage with man-on-the-street interviews and dreamy staged sequences to paint a picture much larger, funnier, moving, and more life-affirming than any music film of recent memory.
Some early praise for PULP:
"A handsome cinematic homage to a unique band, a proud city and the unifying power of pop music. The group’s comeback shows felt like a triumphant lap of honor, and Habicht’s film certainly captures that feeling." – Hollywood Reporter<http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/pulp-sxsw-review-686926>
"Pulp is a smash. Pulp isn't a concert film. It's a love story."
- San Jose Mercury News <http://www.mercurynews.com/music/ci_25310494/sxsw-film-2014-pulp-is-smash>
“PULP…reaches parts other documentaries don’t even come close to – like taking us inside the singer’s hanging garden of cold and flu remedies, which he takes with him on tour to cure any and all ailments, or asking a young girl to muse on ageing and mortality. This is far from a conventional rock documentary, but Pulp are a far from conventional band, and that’s what makes it work.” – NME (9/10)
NB: There are a limited number of screeners available for the film. Please let us know if you are planning a review and we’ll secure one for you.
