Anna Calvi Makes Her US Debut
Playing 3 NYC Shows in March!
The hum of excitement surrounding Anna Calvi’s self-titled debut album has created something of a ripple effect across Europe. Having toured Europe left to right and back again, she’s graced magazine covers in France, Italy, Finland and the UK. Having garnered elusive 4 star reviews from British music bibles Mojo and Uncut and scoring 9/10 on NME, Anna Calvi looks certain to be one of the year’s breakout stars. She kicked off January with an early rave from Spin Magazine on their “Best New Artist’s” list and was chosen as one of Time Out New York’s “Stars of 2011”. The album will be released stateside on March 1st via Domino Records. March is also the magic month which will see Anna cross the ocean to play her first ever North American shows in NYC before staging a takeover of Austin during SXSW.

Anna’s intimate backing band consists of Mally Harpaz on guitar, harmonium and percussion, and Daniel Maiden-Wood on drums. Having recently completed a tour of Europe opening for Grinderman (at the personal request of Nick Cave, surely a kindred spirit) and UK shows with Interpol, and set to appear along side The Arctic Monkeys in the spring, Anna’s striking live performances are said to transport the audience to a dark world of the highest drama.

Early praise for Anna Calvi:
“Her music is the sonic equivalent of a deep red lipstick kiss on a bar napkin. Anna Calvi…combines reverb-drenched guitar, harmonium, and percussion to raise the hairs on your neck...Calvi's singing and guitar playing are so cold-slap virtuosic and self-possessed that it's like the work of a scary new species… the chill you get is truly unnerving” - Spin
“…her inaugural record unfolds with alluring stealth….Anna Calvi rises about the instant-gratification kick of so much contemporary music…whispers, shadowy impulses, counterbalancing unbridled orchestral passages, and the tumult of that voice.” –Mojo (4 Stars)
“This isn’t just a great debut. It’s a fearless rejection of current pop trends, fashioning a benchmark of intensity and originality that the rest of this year’s albums will struggle to match” – Uncut (4 stars)
“Anna Calvi is a London Rookie whose blood-red lips serve as the world’s last line of defense against her voice – a deep, throaty swirl of gothic drama, only intensified by her moody guitar…Calvi pulls theatrical passion from her every syllable, chord and splash of silence…it is ferocious and thoroughly gripping” – Time Out NY
“Calvi’s sumptuously gothic debut is shot through with more references than an encyclopaedia. Thrilling and chilling in equal measure, this self-titled collection of 10 songs is perhaps the first great record of 2011.” - NME (9/10)
“Her sultry self-titled debut album…delivers the same eerie, sophisticated coolness David Lynch defined in Twin Peaks, and Calvi’s intention, to escape into her performances via her dark musical alter ego, is clear to see.” - (American) Vogue
“Her chords are the kind that make grown men contemplate air guitar simulation.” - AOL Spinner
“An immense, reverb-drenched, gothic production job laced with lashings of panoramic, post-Siouxsie drama form The Voice Of 2011” – Classic Rock Magazine
