version</span></u></span><span style="color:black;text-decoration:none"> </span><span style="color:black;text-decoration:none">of Jackson’s “Dirty Diana” — Mr. Tesfaye leaned heavily on his signature voice. It has an ethereal placelessness that’s made him
one of the most striking and distinctive young forces in pop music, even more noteworthy because he’s almost impossible to mimic. His outright great guest appearances — sneering and vicious on Drake’s “Crew Love,” puffy-chested and blithe on Wiz Khalifa’s
“Remember You” — often grab hold of other people’s songs and reshape them in his image.</span></a><span class="MsoHyperlink"><span style="color:black;text-decoration:none"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:12.0pt;line-height:17.6pt;background:white">

almost wholly by Mr. Tesfaye in partnership with DannyBoyStyles and Jason Quenneville (known as Da Heala), and theirs isn’t a universe that can brook much dissent. The arrangements here are grander and more direct than his mixtapes, but still louche, taking
in the full range of 1980s sleaze-rock, from Prince to the “Miami Vice” soundtrack.</span></a><span class="MsoHyperlink"><span style="color:black;text-decoration:none"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:12.0pt;line-height:17.6pt;background:white">

still uncomfortable album full of downer-sex R&B and harsh-sunrise, mildly gothic rock. But whereas, before, he felt like a lone character, now, the movie around him is fleshed out.</span></a><span class="MsoHyperlink"><span style="color:black;text-decoration:none"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></p>

prostitute-pimp dynamic made him not only lecherous but also an unlikely sympathizer with those on the receiving end of lechery.</span></a><span class="MsoHyperlink"><span style="color:black;text-decoration:none"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></p>

over what it’s like to dominate another person’s body and actions with only words. “I got it in control,” he sings on “Love in the Sky,” without a hint of uncertainty. (Or maybe it’s the money: “I own this time/This ain’t new/And I decide when we’re through,”

life: “White Russian when the sun hits, white Russians with tongue tricks,” as he nimbly puts it on the title track. On “Tears in the Rain,” the most epic-scale song here, the chorus sounds triumphant but is really a reveille of misery: “They all feel the
same,” he shouts, about the women who plague his nights. “Adjust to the fame.”</span></a><span class="MsoHyperlink"><span style="color:black;text-decoration:none"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></p>

music, as well. Often the songs blend into each other imperceptibly. Sometimes Mr. Tesfaye multi-tracks his vocals, the agitated and warm and cynical all commingling. Sometimes his singing devolves into exaggerated talking, and his lyrics move toward the mundane
and slurry, but his tone remains unmistakable.</span></a><span class="MsoHyperlink"><span style="color:black;text-decoration:none"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></p>

a rotating cast of the faceless and irrelevant. But there are partners on this album, people who have the capacity for control over Mr. Tesfaye.
